We love Twitter. It’s a powerful tool for social media marketing, a great way to engage with people in your industry, and an all-round fun way to stay connected. Unfortunately, Twitter spam has been around almost as long as Twitter itself. From phishing to malware to hacked accounts, Twitter has its share of shady characters trying to get access to your information. There’s not much to do about that–except report the spammers (see below)– but there is a lot you can do to protect yourself, and to get rid of viruses that may have already infected your account. (And if you use your Twitter account for social media marketing, you should be protecting it just like you’d protect any valuable business asset). Here are some tips and tricks for blocking Twitter spam.

Thanks, this is good info. I wondered if there was a way to keep spammers at bay using Twitter…I’ve never gotten any of these types of generic replies, but if I do, now I know!

Sort of – When it comes to spam messages that are tweeted to you there really isn’t anything you can do.

When it comes to DM spam messages you can closely watch who you’re following and make sure to follow people that you trust. People who you don’t follow can’t send you DMs.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how careful you are, eventually you’ll run into a spam message. My best advice is to just be aware and don’t click on a link that seems suspicious. – Doug
